Greg Carvel became the Head Men’s Hockey Coach at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2016, taking over a team with a record of just two win. Five years later, on April 10, 2021, Carvel coached the team to a decisive 5-0 victory in the NCAA Division I Championship. In 2019, Carvel was awarded the Bob Kullen Coach of the Year Award, the Clark Hodder Coach of the Year Award and the Spencer Penrose Award. Before taking the reins at UMass, Carvel was an NHL assistant coach at the Anaheim Ducks and the Ottawa Senators.

In this video, Greg Carvel talks about how important it is to have athletes be well-rounded, and how well-rounded athletes lead to more team success. Carvel explains that his team has a strong culture and that the foundation of a strong culture is high standards. Finally, Carvel shares that he holds his team to high standards, not only on the ice, but in other aspects of life too, and he attributes the team’s success to this holistic approach.
