The Need for Youth With Physical Disabilities to Participate in Sports

Positive Coaching Alliance is proud to share information on sports participation for disabled youth from the Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP), an organization that focuses on advancing the lives of people with physical disabilities through sports and recreational activities.

BORP explains that students with disabilities are one of the highest at-risk groups in the country. Typically, disabled youth are twice as likely to drop out of high school, become pregnant, or abuse drugs and alcohol. Further, 73% of the disabled community is unemployed and they often experience several secondary health problems like diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

On the other hand, disabled youth who “participate in organized sports and recreation programs are twice as likely to maintain a fitness program as an adult as they would be if they had been introduced to physical fitness later in life.” Sports participation positively impacts future life success and “for youth with disabilities, the effects are even more dramatic than their able-bodied peers.”
