The Power of Saying "WE NEED YOU" After A Player Makes A Mistake

Marlon Stewart (@TheCoachStew) is an Assistant Coach with the Oregon State men’s basketball program (@BeaverMBB). He served as the program’s Director of Basketball Operations during the 2018-19 season. Stewart was an assistant coach at the University of Hawai’i in 2017-18 and helped lead the Rainbow Warriors to a 17-13 record.

In this video, Stewart shares that above all attitude and effort matter more than anything, because players will ALWAYS (at some point) make errors in execution.

If you make a mistake, you must keep positive body language and not be too hard on yourself. Of course, it's important that players own their mistakes, but negative body language can cause a negative ripple effect among teammates and a negative cycle among the player.

After a mistake, one of the best things coaches can say is, "WE NEED YOU!", to improve or execute, as that gives the player ownership over the next step while also filling their tank.
