How Parents Can Help Kids Value Playing Time

Mark West (@mwest41) is the Vice President of Player Programs and is also an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns of the NBA. His roles focus on the business of basketball, player relations and development and community representation. As a player, he competed for 17 seasons in the NBA, six with the Suns, helping them reach the 1993 NBA Finals. He currently ranks third in NBA History in field goal percentage.

In this video, West shares a story where his oldest son thought he wasn’t getting enough playing time and that he should be playing the whole game. West told his son that just because he was a starter, it didn't mean his time on the court is more valuable than his teammates. Athletes need to support every player on their team no matter if they spend most of their time on the bench or if they’re one of the starting 5 players.
