Defining Core Values in Sports with Hudson Taylor

Being a mix of a theatre major and a D-I wrestler at the University of Maryland, Hudson Taylor had a unique perspective on LGBTQ+ respect and inclusion in these two very different worlds. He gained national media attention when he decided to wear an LGBTQ+ equality sticker on his wrestling headgear to confront the marginalization of LGBTQ+ people in sport during his time at University of Maryland. This experience ultimately drove him to start “Athlete Ally,” an organization whose mission is to “end the rampant homophobia and transphobia in sport and to activate the athletic community to exercise their leadership to champion LGBTQ+ equality.”

In this video, Hudson Taylor discusses the importance of core values and how "saying what you are for as opposed to what you are against" is a good rule of thumb for parents or coaches looking to create a welcoming environment for a LGBTQ+ athlete or child. He goes on to state that if an organization or team defined those initial core values at the outset, then any subsequent follow-up conversation will be a lot easier because the organization or team can fall back on those values that they very clearly outlined.
