Why Parents Should Help Athletes Focus On The Controllables
Jeff Rodin (@JeffRodin) is in his 16th year as the Director of Baseball Outreach & Development for the Arizona Diamondbacks of the MLB. In this role, Rodin has revamped the community initiatives of the team by creating youth baseball and softball programs that allow Phoenix area youth to learn and benefit from the same tools and techniques as Diamondbacks players.
In Rodin's opinion, it is crucial that youth sports parents understand perspective. Just because their kid is wearing cool uniforms with MLB logos does not mean they are the best player ever. Even if they have a talented kid, parents should widen their perspective from performance and focus on helping their athlete develop in their own mental, physical, emotional way. Overall, if parents help athletes maintain this focus and help their kid focus what they can control, they will have more fun and stay in the sport longer.
