What Makes A Great Captain?

Capital Lacrosse Club's Director of Lacrosse, Denise Wescott is the driving force behind the club’s player development, team development and college recruitment efforts. She has over 30 years of Division I college coaching experience and was a four-year starting goalkeeper and captain at the University of Maryland in Field Hockey and Lacrosse.

In this video, Wescott talks about how leadership, responsibility, communication, and maturity are all qualities that make a great captain. She emphasizes that good captains make others around them better, put the team first, and do the right things even when no one is watching. Though it's sometimes difficult to stand out on a team, the best way for athletes to prove that they can lead a team is to demonstrate strong character.
