Using The Quiet Drill To Teach Communication

IN ACTION
Watch youth sport coaches from around the country put the principles from Play Positive and Positive Coaching Alliance to work with their athletes.

This In Action video shows how a coach uses the “quiet drill” during practice. Borrowing from Doc Rivers, PCA National Advisory Board Member and Head Coach for the Los Angeles Clippers, this coach uses the drill to reinforce two skill sets: athletes relying solely on instinct to play, and more importantly, the critical role that vocal communication plays in a team's success. When the drill is lifted and players return to normal communication, there is a noticeable increase in energy and teamwork. Try the quiet drill with your team to help increase and improve communication.

This video features Kris Weems, Athletic Director of Menlo School in California. Prior to his current role at Menlo, Weems was an assistant coach and scout for the Golden State Warriors. He has also served as special assistant to the Associate Athletic Director at his alma mater, Stanford University.

Positive Coaching Alliance is proud to have worked with Liberty Mutual Insurance to create this video and other powerful resources.
