Tim Duncan's Humility, Respect For Coaches Are Lessons For Any Athlete
Lon Babby, a PCA-Phoenix Board Member, is a Senior Advisor for the Phoenix Suns (@Suns). He is best known for his time as an NBA agent for some of the game's most respected sportsmen: Tim Duncan, Shane Battier, Ray Allen and others. He also spent over 35 years as an attorney, starting with the Washington Redskins, and is known today as one of the 100 most powerful people in sports.
In this video, Babby discusses his time with Tim Duncan, who plays for the San Antonio Spurs (@spurs). As his former agent, Babby describes Duncan as having the most humility he ever identified in someone of extraordinary talent. Duncan was always aware of his teammates and supported them in whatever way possible, as evidenced by an experience with David Robinson in his rookie year. Babby also notes the reason that the Spurs coaching staff and Coach Greg Popovich have success is because Duncan buys into the program and reflects a willingness to be coached, which allows others to buy in as well.
Duncan's humility and level of trust in his coach are two things that clearly allowed him to be successful and are lessons to any youth athlete. If one of the world's best can be humble and respect their coach, all athletes can exemplify this behavior, as it not only makes him a better person but also a better athlete and teammate.
