Three Steps Toward Creating A Development Zone Culture

Jim Thompson (@JimThompson18) is the Founder of Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), a non-profit organization founded at Stanford University with the mission of helping to transform the culture of youth sports to give all young athletes the opportunity for a positive, character-building experience.

In this video clip Thompson explains three steps toward creating a Development Zone™ culture in a given youth sports organization. One is setting expectations for behavior among all constituents and participants of the organization.

Second, the culture must be protected by "fixing broken windows." That means immediately correcting violations of the norms established within the organization, such as enforcing rules about not yelling at game officials.

Finally, leaders should institute structural pillars into the organization so that standards of behavior stay in place even if leadership positions turn over.
