When coaches and players are new to each other, Francona advises figuring out exactly which approach to take -- when to push, how hard, etc. -- in order to motivate the players. He says it's the coaches responsibility to get to know the players well enough to know what's important to them and what they need from their coach to succeed. "Everybody's different," Francona says here, and he wants all of his players to feel like their coaches care about them. Ultimately, Francona explains, he's asking them to do a lot on the field, so he better know them off the field.
