Sometimes Coaches Don't Know Their Athletes Have A Learning Disability

Dr. Karen Collins (@KC_UNH) is an associate professor of Kinesiology (Sport Studies) at University of New Hampshire. Collins research often focuses around coaching athletes with learning disabilities (such as ADHD) and the practical implications her findings have for coaches.

In this video, Collins talks about the importance among coaches of establishing a culture that focuses on learning about how your athletes learn best, as this is an easy way to learn about your athlete's learning disabilities. Coaches can also have athletes fill out forms that ask how they learn best and have write down an experience where they really enjoyed the sport because of something specific the coach did. Collins also urges coaches to incorporate parents of the players so they can learn about the athlete's school accommodations for a given learning disability.
