Reward Extraordinary Feats, Not Ordinary

Pat Fitzgerald (@coachfitz51), a PCA National Advisory Board Member, is the Northwestern University Head Football Coach. Prior to coaching, his College Football Hall of Fame career included twice being named an All-American, twice winning both the Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik Awards, and leading Northwestern to back-to-back Big Ten titles and a Rose Bowl appearance in the mid-90's.

For those who may think positive coaching lends to an "everyone-gets-a-trophy" environment, consider the words of ultra-positive Pat Fitzgerald: "I don't give guys stickers for doing what they're supposed to do."

While players hold themselves and each other accountable on that basic level, as do coaches, "When we do something extraordinary, we're going to celebrate it," Fitzgerald says.
