Phil Jackson: Coaches Are Teachers

Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Spokesperson, Phil Jackson (@PhilJackson11), is perhaps the greatest basketball coach ever and among the best coaches in the history of American sports. He holds the NBA record of coaching 11 NBA Championship teams with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. Now a New York Knicks executive, Jackson contributes to PCA’s mission through fundraising activities and event and video appearances. He also wrote the foreword to PCA Founder Jim Thompson's (@JimThompson18) book, The Double-Goal Coach®.

Jackson understands how the role of the coach is similar to that of a teacher. Coaches are educating their athletes, and bringing educational philosophies to sport helped him with his own coaching.

Jackson describes how the earlier coaches from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s “considered themselves teachers.” He used methods learned from these coaches to influence how he taught the game of basketball to his teams, by making sure his players had verbally and visually understood what he was teaching in order to effectively coach.
