Pat Fitzgerald On The Importance of Positive Coaching
Pat Fitzgerald (@coachfitz51), a PCA National Advisory Board Member, is the Northwestern University Head Football Coach. Prior to coaching, his College Football Hall of Fame career included twice being named All-America, twice winning both the Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik Awards, and leading Northwestern to back-to-back Big Ten titles and a Rose Bowl appearance in the mid-90's.
Fitzgerald emphasizes the difference between coaches who ""teach up"" rather than ""tear down."" His favorite memories from youth sports are of coaches who taught him sportsmanship and how to be a team player. His best coaches didn’t tear him down. As a result, he tries to coach up every day in the practices he runs for the Wildcats.
He puts it simply at the end of this video clip, saying that players just want to learn and have fun, so coach them up!
