Neither Adults Nor Kids Like Being Berated For Mistakes

Oliver Luck is the NCAA's Executive Vice President of Regulatory Affairs. Prior to this position, Luck was the Athletic Director at West Virginia University. He was an NFL quarterback and is the father of Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback, Andrew Luck. This video was co-produced by PCA in partnership with USA Football.

Here, Luck explains the importance of positive coaching and leadership in youth athletics. Similar to adults, younger athletes appreciate constructive leadership and respond better to positive coaching tactics. Nobody likes to be berated, and positive responses to that type of treatment are rare.

A specific tip here for coaches to lessen the intimidation factor kids can feel even during constructive criticism is for the coaches of younger athletes to crouch down and get onto the level of the athlete.
