Mike Nealy: How Losing Creates Teachable Moments For Youth Athletes
A PCA-Phoenix Board Member, Mike Nealy (@mjnealy) is the Executive Director of the Fiesta Bowl, serving Phoenix and its surrounding communities with college football bowl games since 1971. The Fiesta Bowl was part of the Bowl Championship Series for years and is now a part of the College Football Playoff. Before guiding the Fiesta Bowl efforts, Nealy spent 8 years with the Phoenix (Arizona) Coyotes, leading the organization to record breaking sales and operating successes as President and COO of the team.
In this video, Nealy goes against the grain and explains the benefits of youth athletes losing games. "I'm glad my son doesn't win every game," Nealy says, "because losing teaches more."
In helping his son put a loss into perspective, Nealy recalls telling him, "I'd rather you try your hardest and lose than go out there and not compete and still win. My son agreed with me, and that was a teaching moment that we couldn't have had if he had won the game."
