Marc Trestman: The Purpose Of Coaching

NFL Coach Marc Trestman is a PCA National Advisory Board Member. Trestman has 28 years of coaching experience in the NFL, Canadian Football League and collegiately. He is also the author of Perseverance: Life Lessons on Leadership and Teamwork.

In this clip, taken from an interview prepared exclusively for PCA, Trestman shares his belief that coaching young people is one of the most difficult yet honorable jobs. He hopes coaches take stock in why they’re doing what they’re doing and to reflect on their purpose.

Trestman also stresses his belief that winning is the result of doing the right things in coaching, not the reason to coach. The right behavior leads to winning, and great coaches who make this connection and focus on skill sets can benefit from helping their athletes develop into better people.
