Marc Trestman On Culture And Leadership
NFL Coach Marc Trestman is a PCA National Advisory Board Member. Trestman has 28 years of coaching experience in the NFL, Canadian Football League and collegiately. He is also the author of Perseverance: Life Lessons on Leadership and Teamwork.
In this clip, taken from an interview prepared exclusively for PCA, Trestman shares his idea that “Culture is the character of the team.” He believes the best way to begin shaping that, which he does as a coach, is to develop authentic relationships with the players and relate to them as people. This will lead to truth, clarity and communication. With this approach, he has a hard-working football team whose culture is based on respect.
Fostering such team culture starts with the coaches and leaders. Everything from how you talk to how you listen contributes to your role as a powerful leader. A team full of leaders with this attitude leads to a culture where individuals are willing to take a back seat to the team.
