Katey Stone: Be Intentional About Team Culture
PCA National Advisory Board Member Katey Stone (@kbstone9) is one of the most successful coaches in the history of Division 1 Women’s Ice Hockey. As head coach of the Harvard Crimson for the past 18 seasons, she has accumulated 378 victories and has led the team to several NCAA Championship appearances. She also coached the U.S. Women's Ice Hockey team to a Silver Medal in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Stone knows that strong team culture can catapult a team to level beyond what was possible with talent alone. For college teams, building a team culture starts with the recruiting process. Stone recommends coaches identify kids with character over talent. It is most important to recruit athletes who do not put themselves before the team, than to find a hotshot athlete. Once these athletes are on the team, coaches can continue to foster team culture with a primed audience.
