Joe Dumars is a former NBA Executive and All-Star player for the Detroit Pistons. The NBA Sportsmanship Award is named the Joe Dumars Trophy, and in 2006 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Always strive to be more than ‘just an athlete’. Sports was just a vehicle for me to accomplish my long-term goals. I loved it but that was not all that I wanted out of life. Work to excel at sports and academics. For me, I always thought it would be cool to be a great athlete and be smart at the same time.
Video Transcript: But I always wanted to be more than ‘just an athlete’. I never wanted to be just that and that alone. I knew that I had the fortitude and the aptitude to be able to learn and pick up things about anything. Sports was just a vehicle for me to do a lot of things around the world and stuff that I’ve done. That’s how I saw it and I just used it as that. I loved it, it was great, I accomplished a lot, but it wasn’t the ‘end all be all’ for me. It really was not; it never has been. You can do both. Don’t just be a jock, be educated. Be smart. For me, I always thought it would be cool to be a great athlete and be smart at the same time. I always thought that was cool. Anyway, that’s who I am guys, that’s who I’ve always been. I really appreciate you guys having me here.
