Jerry Manuel On Coaches Creating Quality Relationships

After his playing career in Major League Baseball, Jerry Manuel managed the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets. He currently runs the Jerry Manuel Foundation, which is a PCA Partner in the Sacramento Area, and he leads Major League Baseball's diversity efforts.

In this video, Manuel shares his principle, "Rules without relationships equals rebellion." To illustrate the point, Manuel talks about the influence of socio-economic backgrounds on the values of different players who must all come together under a common set of values shared by a team. The coach's ability to build relationships is key to managing that situation to the point where rules are less necessary, thus reducing the chance players will rebel.
