The Importance of Service: Matthew Slater on Giving Back to the Community

Matthew Slater has played for the Patriots in the NFL since 2008 and is the teams’ longest tenured player. Elected Special Teams Captain by his teammates in his third season, Slater has served as a team captain for a decade. Slater is the Patriots’ representative to both the NFL Players’ Association and the United Way. Slater also runs the team’s Bible study. In 12 years in the NFL, Slater has been a 9X Pro Bowl selection, 3X Super Bowl Champion, and, like his father NFL Hall of Famer Jackie Slater, been awarded the Bart Starr Award for exemplifying character and leadership at home, on the field, and in the community. In these video clips, Slater is interviewed by Devin McCourty, who has served as a Patriots captain alongside Slater for many years, and Jason McCourty, who served as a Patriots captain alongside Slater and Devin in the 2020-21 season.

Alongside two of his Patriots teammates, Slater discusses the importance of service and giving back to the community. He illustrates the significance of taking the time to get to know people that are different from us and serving one another in life. Slater goes on to state that if we can complete this challenge, our communities around the world will be a better place.
