Importance of Autonomy For High School Athletes

Stewart Brown is a former player for England's Queens Park Rangers F.C., current head girl's soccer coach for perennial Dallas-area powerhouse Highland Park High School and the Director of Coaching for the Highland Park Soccer Academy. He also earlier coached for Southern Methodist University, leading the team to four conference championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances in four years.

In this video, Brown outlines the ways in which he gives players autonomy within the team structure. For example, he frequently turns over control of practice to seniors on the team so they can conduct team-bonding activities. He also accepts a great deal of input from players on the balance between duration and intensity of practice and training sessions.
