Hugh McCutcheon On Establishing Trust Within Teams

Hugh McCutcheon (@McCutcheonMN) will be entering his fifth season at the helm of Golden Gopher Volleyball. Named the 2015 AVCA National Coach of the Year and 2015 Big Ten Coach of the Year, McCutcheon gained earlier fame for coaching both the men's and women's volleyball teams to Olympic medals: the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal and 2012 Olympic Games silver medal, respectively.

In this video, McCutcheon explains that the most important element of developing relationships with athletes is trust, ""the currency that makes the process of change work.” McCutcheon describes a trustworthy person as someone with integrity, character, honesty, friendliness and respectfulness.

He stresses, however, that above all, a trustworthy person takes responsibility for his actions and holds others accountable for their actions. He credits this approach for the “profound transformation[s]” in many of his athletes who have used the trust developed with coaches as a springboard for improving their performance–technically, tactically and mentally.
