How Coaches Can Work With Officials
David Jacobson (@CoachDaveJake), a former PCA staff member, has coached children ages five to 15 in baseball, softball and basketball (including his own son and daughter), and has officiated baseball, softball, basketball and flag football.
As Jacobson explains here, he always makes a point to introduce himself to the officials before a game. Establishing that relationship with officials shows respect for their role, which can be mutually beneficial during games. Conversations about areas of emphasis for the officials sensitizes the coach to what may be called and why, which can prevent arguments, too many questioned calls or other points of contention. A positive working relationship with the officials shows that you Honor the Game as a coach, and reinforces your commitment to the rules and safety of your players.
