George Karl: Positivity Is A Choice
George Karl (@CoachKarl22) is a basketball lifer. He learned his basketball playing and coaching from Dean Smith, the late, great University of North Carolina coach and PCA National Advisory Board Member. Karl became just the seventh coach in NBA history to reach 1,000 career wins. He earned the NBA Coach of the Year Award in 2013 and has served as head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Albany Patroons (CBA), Real Madrid (EuroLeague), Seattle SuperSonics (which he led to the NBA Finals), Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento.
Karl asserts that positivity is a choice. You can see the proverbial glass as half-empty or half-full. He explains how changing his mind-set from negative to positive helped his relationship with Sonics guard Gary Payton turn a corner.
Karl also delves into his working relationships with other point guards he has coached, including Chauncey Billups, Sam Cassell and Andre Miller. He acknowledges there may be times with players, when "We're going to have our nightmares, and our fights and our feuds, but we also know we're going to have moments where we're getting the job done and feel good about our relationships."
