Colt McCoy's Tips For Parents During The Recruiting Process

Colt McCoy (@ColtMcCoy) plays quarterback for the NFL's Washington Redskins. As the starting quarterback for the University of Texas Longhorns from 2006–2009, McCoy won the 2008 Walter Camp Award, was the 2008 Heisman Trophy runner-up and was a 2009 Heisman finalist.

What can parents do in the recruiting process? McCoy shares some tips from his experience. First and foremost, he recommends parents understand the importance of the education that your child will receive wherever he or she plays. He played football AND graduated, which was important to him.

Second, McCoy suggests parents be a sounding board for their child, but refrain from pressuring them. He chose the University of Texas, which his parents supported, but he knows if he had chosen another school they would have supported that decision, as well. Finally, he urges parents to not make the recruiting process more than it is by keeping the process in perspective.
