A Coach's Own Unique Vocabulary
Marion Jones -- who coaches track and field, cross country and football at Houston's St. Vincent de Paul School -- recalls one of his childhood coaches imploring him to "Keep your C," meaning "Keep your composure" so as not to let your teammates down.
That coach also used the mantra "Hold the rope," equating the importance of teammates supporting each other to a life-or-death situation of saving a friend dangling from a rope over the edge of a cliff. These are example of how that coach inspired Marion to become a coach and develop his own unique vocabulary for getting through to kids.
