Coaching Your Own Child: Switching Roles

David Jacobson (@CoachDaveJake) a former PCA staff member, has coached children ages five to 15 in baseball, softball and basketball (including his own son and daughter), and has officiated baseball, softball, basketball and flag football.

Whenever you coach your own child, there needs to be a distinction between your roles as parent and coach. However, as Jacobson advises here, the transition between roles does not have to be sudden or jarring. If you have a strong relationship with your child at home, this transition can become seamless. A strong relationships at home allows for an easier transition, since the shift from home to competitive environments will likely cause some extrinsic factors in the relationship to change.
