Coaching Body Language

Kevin Eastman (@kevineastman) was Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Clippers. For the 2013-2014 season, he served as assistant coach under PCA National Advisory Board Member Doc Rivers and served as Rivers’ assistant for nine years with the Celtics, including their 2007-2008 NBA Championship season. Kevin also continues his long relationship with Nike as the national director of Nike’s skill development programs for elite high school and college players, and he is owner and president of Kevin Eastman Basketball and co-founder of Coaching U LIVE.

In this video, Eastman examines the importance of coaching body language. He believes that coaches coach two groups: the players and themselves. Players observe their coaches body language and it has an effect on their sporting experience. This means players and coaches need to make each other aware of the kind of body language they use to communicate. Eastman suggested showing players film in order to figure out what they notice within their own body language and what they want their body language to show others. Coaches should have self-awareness because their body language sends messages; it is a discipline that can always be improved.
