Claude Julien: How Fun Pays Off
Claude Julien is the head coach of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens. He was formerly the head coach of the Boston Bruins from 2007-2017. He led the team to the 2011 Stanley Cup and before his departure in 2017 was the longest-tenured head coach in the NHL.
Here, Julien says that there is too much pressure on players at all levels of hockey. An overly business-like approach from start to finish of every practice and meetings can suck the fun out of the sport. Ironically, fun can bring about a great deal more success in individual players and the team as a whole. When they are having fun, players are more likely to open up to each other, creating team bonds that manifest during competition, when players are more willing to sacrifice and help each other out. Team chemistry through fun can key success!
