Chris Collins: Flexible Leadership Maximizes Potential
Chris Collins (@coach_collins) is the Head Basketball Coach at Northwestern University. Before arriving, Collins spent 13 years as an assistant coach for Duke and also worked closely with the USA Men's Basketball teams that won Olympic Gold Medals in 2008 and 2012. As a player, Collins received Illinois' top high school honor as 'Mr. Basketball' and went on to an illustrious career at Duke University.
One of the most important things to do as a coach is to keep an open mind and be flexible as unique situations and challenges arise. If coaches keep an open mind, they will most likely maximize the potential of each individual player and get the most out of the group. For instance, when picking captains for a team, coaches should keep an open mind about how many captains there should be because each team is different. Collins urges coaches to be flexible in these situations and others and not force a plan on a team that doesn't fit the situation.
