The Challenges Young Muslim Girls Face In The Sports World

Fartun Osman, who coaches basketball, soccer and track and field for Higher Ground Academy, won Positive Coaching Alliance’s coveted Double-Goal Coach® Award presented by TeamSnap in 2016 for her positive impact on youth athletes. Osman, a former Somali National Basketball Team player, focuses on empowering girls who might otherwise miss out on athletics because of Muslim cultural biases against women in sports.

In this video, Osman talks about the struggles young Muslim girls face when playing sports. Many times young Muslim girls are judged before they can even prove what they are capable of, but in Osman’s words, “whether they wear the hijab, or don’t wear the hijab, they can compete."
