The Challenges Of Being A Parent-Coach For Twins And Siblings

Matt Kata (@MattK8A) is a former Major League Baseball player and the Cleveland Guardians Manager of Youth Baseball Development & Initiatives. Kata graduated from St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio.

Kata talks about how important it is to be fair to your kids as well as the rest of the team when you are a coach and a parent. Having twins, the biggest lesson he talks about is making sure that both children are treated as individuals. It can be easy to lump twins together as one group, but he stresses the importance of making sure they know that they are individual people. As a coach to his children, he makes sure to treat them as if they are any of the other players while he is at practices or games. He emphasizes the importance of not being overly critical of his kids as many parents can be when coaching. He focuses on getting appropriately excited about their success.
