The Best Way Assistants Can Give Coaching Suggestions

Jason Sacks (@jrsacks22), the former Executive Director for PCA Chicago, is now PCA's Director of Business Development. After coaching at the collegiate level, he turned his attention to High School Basketball and is now the Assistant Coach at Perspectives (MSA) Charter High School in Chicago.

As an assistant coach, Sacks understands effective ways to give advice to the head coach. He has learned that advice is more likely to be received if there is a strong and long-lasting relationship between the assistant and head coach.

It's especially important to consider the manner and situation in which advice is given, because an assistants advice is a suggestion. If you have valuable advice for your head coach you should consider having a one-on-one conversation and avoid giving suggestions to the coach in front of the team, as that can destroy the credibility of the entire coaching staff.
