Nutrition: Seven Foods To Avoid Before Workout, Practices and Games

Many dietitians and nutritionists suggest these foods to avoid before a workout, practice or competition:

  • Salad
  • Hot sauces and spices
  • Fried foods
  • Candy
  • Creamy foods and sauces
  • Burgers
  • Whole grains

The sports nutritionist for the New York Giants, Tara Ostrowe, noticed that players think candy will give them a boost, but the sugar rush actually causes their bodies to go into storage mode. This does not necessarily mean that athletes must avoid sugar at all times, but pre-competition, it just does not help. Other foods, such as hot sauces and whole grains, often cause heartburn during competition.
