Concussions in Youth Sports

Positive Coaching Alliance is proud to share information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on concussions in youth sports. CDC has developed a program called HeadsUp, which helps to spread awareness of concussions in sports and to improve methods of dealing with brain injuries.

A key message from the HeadsUp initiative is that the default reaction of parents and coaches when a youth athlete suffers head trauma is to remove the athlete from play until the players is further examined and cleared for continued activity by health care professionals. The research on brain injuries shows lifelong damage when athletes do not allow themselves to fully recover before returning to play. It takes an effort from everyone involved in youth sports to monitor injuries and ensure the safety of young athletes.

The information found at this link contains fact sheets and action items for coaches, athletes, and parents.
