Basketball Practice Plan For Coaches Of Pre-Teens (Jr. NBA Starter)

The Jr. NBA (@jrnba), a PCA National Partner, is the NBA's official youth basketball participation program for boys and girls ages 6-14 that teaches the fundamental skills and core values of the game at the grassroots level to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for all. PCA played an integral role in helping develop the Jr. NBA instructional curriculum.

The curriculum features four levels – Rookie, Starter, All-Star, and MVP – that provide proper instruction to youth players at every level of skill development.

At the Starter Level (typically ages 9-11), the fundamental skills will be honed and expanded upon while the players develop an understanding of what it means to be a part of a team. It is in the Starter level that we begin introducing team offensive and team defensive concepts. Again five-on-five competition is limited, yet the frequency of practices may increase from the Rookie level. The goal of the Starter level is to continue having fun, develop further skills, and begin to understand team concepts.
