Addressing LGBTQ Issues In Intercollegiate Sports

The LGBTQ Subcommittee of the NCAA submitted a report on the inclusion of LGBTQ athletes in 2012. The report discusses how student-athletes and staff can help maintain and promote the NCAA core values of diversity, inclusion, and gender equity.

The report identifies how LGBTQ inclusion must play an integral role in achieving institutional diversity. The subcommittee’s charge is to provide leadership and advocacy by raising awareness of, and providing resources on, issues related to:

1) Equitable opportunities
2) Fair treatment
3) Respect for LGBTQ student-athletes, coaches, administrators and all others associated with intercollegiate athletics.

The report draws attention to the importance of LGBTQ inclusion and also shows several ways that the LGBTQ community is commonly misunderstood in the world of college sports. Finally, the report offers best practices for creating inclusive athletics departments with insights from key Athletic Directors and Executives.
