Teaching Transferable Skills: Those That Apply To Life Beyond Sports
In this video, Jenny O, an assistant professor at California State University - East Bay, advises coaches on teaching transferable skills (i.e., skills that are based in sport and athletic performance, but which also apply to other aspects of life). Coaches should be intentional and explicit in making athletes aware of the broader value of acquiring a given skill, tactic or strategy. That awareness incentivizes athletes to take the necessary steps to acquire the skill, as they recognize that doing so may also mean greater success in school, employment and their interpersonal relationships.
