Sports Parenting: Realistic Views Of Your Child's Potential

After his playing career in Major League Baseball, Jerry Manuel managed the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets. He currently runs the Jerry Manuel Foundation, which is a PCA Partner in the Sacramento Area, and he leads Major League Baseball's diversity efforts.

Manuel says the days of coaches motivating players through fear and intimidation are gone, and believes the same is true for parenting. He advises parents to stay supportive of their children's love of sport, but to view their children's talent levels through the eyes of a critic, so that parents maintain a realistic sense of their kids' athletic potential. Finally, he advises that parents can leverage a child's love of sport to help keep the child "on the straight and narrow."
