Sports Help Disabled Kids Realize Their Independence

Dan James (@Dgjames70) worked for the United States Tennis Association where he led the wheelchair tennis program coaching at 5 Paralympics. He played college tennis at Gustavus Adolphus College and began his coaching career under his head Coach Steve Wilkinson at Tennis and Life Camps. Dan James was formerly PCA-Seattle Executive Director.

James talks about the very different pathway it is to teach a kid with disabilities how to play sports. Besides any physical limitations, these kids have never been told that they can play sports. They do not really understand this level of independence. It is a real gift when these kids do finally get that they are capable and can play independently. This not only benefits the kids, but everyone around the sport who forget about the disability and are just watching the sport.
