Parent-Coach Tip: Focus On Fun And Fundamentals

Tony Price (@TonyPriceAD) is the current Athletic Director at Randolph High School in Randolph, MA and was previously the Assistant Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at Simmons College in Boston. Price is also involved with the Randolph Youth Basketball Association and is known for instilling 'character and confidence' in his student-athletes.

In this video, Price gives several pieces of advice for parents coaching their own children. Price urges parent-coaches to maintain clear communication and emphasize fun and fundamentals instead of pushing their child too hard. Let the kids be the driving force behind their own experience, and focus on helping the kid enjoy sports. That way, when they are older and make their own decisions, they will want to stay in sports rather than walk away. While it is certainly okay to instruct athletes on the fundamentals, Price urges parent-coaches not to forget that their own goals for kids should not outweigh the desires of the athletes themselves.
