Jim Sochor On Leadership

Jim Sochor is a former football player who served as the head football coach and college athletics administrator for the University of California, Davis. During his time at Davis, Sochor won 18 consecutive conference championships and was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in 1983. Sochor was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1999.

This video was shot as part of the 2008 Youth Sports Awards Sponsored by Deloitte, where Sochor was the recipient of the Ronald L. Jensen Award for Lifetime Achievement. In a Q&A at the event, Sochor explains his definition of a great leader is “find out where they want to go and take them there." He made his actions about the team, not about the coaches. Once he knew where the team wanted to go, he helped them get there, adding that he didn't step forward until he was needed. That mentality kept his team special and allowed him to be the best leader.
