Focusing On Mastery vs. Winning

Stewart Brown is a former player for England's Queens Park Rangers F.C., current head girl's soccer coach for perennial Dallas-area powerhouse Highland Park High School and the Director of Coaching for the Highland Park Soccer Academy. He also earlier coached for Southern Methodist University, leading the team to four conference championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances in four years.

In this video, Brown explains why he avoids talking much about winning and losing with his teams. Rather, he prefers to focus on effort and performance, making sure that each athlete can look teammates in the eye and walk off the field with heads held high, win or lose. And, he explains, the teams still somehow win often, even in the absence of emphasizing the scoreboard results.
