Focus On Long Term Improvement, Not Immediate Wins
Jenny Ruiz (@JenRuiz13) is a former Mexican-American soccer player that played professionally in the United States and on the Women’s National team in Mexico. She traveled to Athens, Greece in 2004 as a part of Team Mexico for the Olympic Games. Ruiz currently coaches youth soccer in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Mastering a skill in a game is much more important to Ruiz than winning a game. She would much rather have her players perfect their indirect passing, for example, than focus on winning alone because it is more beneficial for long term improvement. This is a difficult lesson for youth athletes to learn because they’re so focused on the short-term, instant gratification of winning and being the best that long term benefits of overall improvement are often over-looked.
