Coaches Need To Make Room For Life Lessons In Sports

Jamie Young, a 2017 Double-Goal Coach® Award Winner, coaches football at St. Mary’s School (Medford, OR) (@StMarysMedford). Young focuses on capitalizing on the short time he has to influence players before they leave St. Mary’s, less in terms of winning games than in becoming “strong, confident young men, who make good decisions."

Young says, "There will come a point where they will no longer put helmets or cleats on." He is stressing the importance of teaching lessons to his players that will translate to situations later in life. A few examples are resilience, work ethic, facing adversity, and so on. He summarizes that it is all about using athletics to help teach his players the skills necessary to face challenges in the real world.
