Claude Julien: "Release And Reload" To Move Beyond Mistakes

Claude Julien is the head coach of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens. He was formerly the head coach of the Boston Bruins from 2007-2017. He led the team to the 2011 Stanley Cup and before his departure in 2017 was the longest-tenured head coach in the NHL.

In this video, Julien advises coaches on how to help their players past mistakes. He points out that the coach need not always make a correction immediately. because often players already know what they did wrong.

He does like to counsel players to "release and reload" so that they are not "dragging that (mistake) around during the next shift." Mistake rituals and trigger words such as "release and reload" are a great shorthand way to return players' attention to the next play as quickly as possible.
