An Argument Against Specializing In One Position

Jeff Rodin (@JeffRodin) is in his 16th year as the Director of Baseball Outreach & Development for the Arizona Diamondbacks of the MLB. In this role, Rodin has revamped the community initiatives of the team by creating youth baseball and softball programs that allow Phoenix area youth to learn and benefit from the same tools and techniques as Diamondbacks players.

Today in youth sports, kids are not only specializing in one sport, but they are specializing in one position. Rodin cautions against this trend, noting that it is important for players to be well-rounded and learn diverse skill sets in different sports and different positions. When players specialize early they may be robbing themselves of an opportunity to fall in love with a sport or a position as they develop.
